How to Remove GPS Location from Photos on Windows

To remove GPS from a photo—or remove GPS data from a whole folder—create separate sharing copies, select Remove GPS only, and verify a sample before upload. This removes geotags without blindly deleting useful capture dates, captions, copyright, orientation, or the ICC color profile.

Create public copies instead of changing originals
Add the photos, choose a separate output folder, and select Remove GPS only. Keep the untouched originals in a protected archive. This separates the public-delivery copy from the historical master and makes the privacy decision reversible.
Check the output plan before running the batch. If conversion or resizing is not required, avoid adding unrelated pixel changes merely to clean metadata.
Remove the complete location group
GPS is more than latitude and longitude. EXIF defines a separate GPS IFD with fields for altitude, timestamp, satellites, direction, destination, processing method, and positioning error. XMP can also carry location information, so a complete policy must inspect both families.
Use Remove GPS only when dates, captions, color profile, and authorship should remain. Use Remove all metadata for anonymous public assets or when software and author fields are also sensitive. Preserve ICC separately if color fidelity matters.
Verify the output independently
Inspect at least one result with the application metadata view and a second tool such as ExifTool. Confirm that GPSLatitude, GPSLongitude, altitude, direction, destination, and related XMP location fields are absent while the fields you elected to retain remain.
Do this before uploading. A social network, messenger, or marketplace may remove some metadata, but its behavior can change and may differ between upload methods. Local verification keeps the privacy decision under your control.
Use the stricter policy for sensitive work
For evidence, journalism, field research, children, homes, or confidential sites, retain the original securely and distribute a purpose-made copy. Consider whether visible landmarks, filenames, captions, and folder names reveal location even after metadata is clean.
Record the metadata policy in the batch report or recipe. Privacy is easier to audit when the exact transformation is repeatable rather than performed manually on individual files.

Does removing GPS change image pixels?
The metadata policy does not intentionally alter pixels. Conversion, resizing, or other selected operations can change them, so avoid unrelated edits when metadata removal is the only goal.
Can location exist outside EXIF?
Yes. XMP and visible content can also reveal location, which is why verification should cover more than two EXIF fields.
Should I delete all metadata?
Only when the public copy needs that stricter policy. Remove GPS only when dates, captions, copyright, or ICC information should remain.
